Important Changes to Online Assessment Procedures

Dear Students,

The College has been extremely busy making many changes and improvements over the past few years. You’ve probably noticed some of the updates to our websites and read some of the announcements we’ve
been sending out about projects such as the books on CBT and hypnotherapy.

As part of a general overhaul of our websites we’ve made the decision to replace the Moodle educational software system. This means that from the 1^st March coursework will no longer be submitted online via the UKcognitive.com website. However, you will be able to submit your coursework electronically via email for marking.

If you are in the process of working on your assessment online, please complete the paper you are currently working on, using the online system, by the 1^st March and email us to let us know when it is ready to be marked. Subsequent papers should then be completed in MS-Word and emailed to us.

If you require a copy of the questions to be emailed to you, please let us know by the 1^st March as you will not have access to them online after this date.

NB: Coursework saved or submitted online will be unavailable after March 2012. If you wish to keep your work, please make sure you make a copy of it before this date.

The Discovery of Hypnosis: The Complete Writings of James Braid

This is the first complete edition of Braid's writings. Braid was the founder of hypnotherapy and his writings are important because they help to dispel many of the misconceptions that have historically arisen in relation to the subject, which I argue are due to the widespread confusion of hypnotism with Mesmerism. Edited by me, with detailed prefatory essays.

The Philosophy of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

This is the first text to explore in detail the philosophical origins of Beck's cognitive therapy and Ellis' REBT. Modern academic scholarship on Stoicism and other forms of Hellensitic philosophy reveals the extensive and systematic nature of psychotherapeutic techniques used by ancient philosophers. Now these can be compared to modern empirically-supported therapies so that psychotherapists can benefit from the literary and philosophical masterpieces of the ancient world, which provide new perspectives on current clinical practice. This book has received very favourable reviews from both academic philosophers and professional psychologists in peer-reviewed journals.

Teach Yourself: Build your Resilience

The latest in Hodder's celebrated "Teach Yourself" series, this self-help book provides a detailed, systematic approach to resilience-building based on contemporary mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches to CBT. The concept of resilience-building is updated in light of modern research on prevention and mediation of psychological disturbance and reconceptualised in terms of maintaining or resuming a commitment to living in accord with your personal values.

The Practice of Cognitive-Behavioural Hypnotherapy

This is a major clinical textbook combining cognitive-behavioural conceptualisations of hypnosis with cognitive-behavioural treatment interventions. It's based on an innovative metacognitive reconceptualisation of hypnosis, based on current experimental research. A direct link is made to Braid's original Victorian hypnotism, termed "Neobraidism".
